Firefly year-end sale — tickets from RM9.99

Bernama reports that Firefly is having a year-end sale on all its destinations departing from Penang and Subang with tickets priced from RM9.99. The destinations are Langkawi, Kuantan, Kota Baharu, Terengganu, Johor Baharu, Ko Samui and Phuket. The offer is available until December 31.

Firefly to expand Indonesian and Thai services

The Star reports that Firefly is planning to expand its services to Sumatra, Indonesia, and Southern Thailand in 2008. Among the new routes the airline is looking at are Bandar Aceh, Palembang, Pekan Baru, Padang, all in Indonesia, and Hat Yai and Krabi in Southern Thailand. Firefly CEO Eddy Leong said the new routes would start when they took delivery of the first three new ATR 72-500s aircraft in September.

MAS makes US$650m deal to buy 20 turboprop planes

AP reports that MAS on Tuesday inked a US$650m deal to buy 20 turboprop aircraft from ATR to boost its budget and rural air services. Ten of the ATR 72-500 planes will be operated by its budget unit Firefly and the rest by MASwings, a new subsidiary set up to run rural services in Malaysian states on Borneo island, it said in a statement.

Subang only for turbo-props

Bernama reports that the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport at Subang is only for turbo-prop aircraft according to MAS. “As far as I’m concerned, the govt has told us that Subang Airport is a turbo-prop airport,” said MAS MD and CEO Seri Idris Jala on Monday. “The govt has made a very clear statement, the last time when we were launching Firefly in Subang,” he said when asked to comment on AirAsia’s interest to operate from Subang Airport.
